the shows’ themes are actually not in opposition but are complementary and important in their own right and also fandom infighting is annoying
man just look how the dominian war ends, with the two leaders of the federation war effort refusing to drink wine with their klingon counterpart because they were standing on the ruins of their enemy, the cardassians, who had suffered a massacre, and to celebrate this state of affairs disgusted them. One of the main themes of DS9 is the Federation coming under internal strain due to its necessary compromises with the other powers and the war with the dominion, but ultimately surviving with its core value intact. This was also a theme in TNG, including pretty well-regarded episodes like the drumhead.
Ferengi society is transformed in DS9 due largely to close contact with the superior Federation culture.
Also, when does anyone (in the Federation) engage in colonialism in DS9? Where is there neoliberal politics – I don’t recall there being any push towards privatisation of state sectors?
“Let’s talk about the reason propaganda isn’t working on gen z” from the same people who casually say “oh it’s amazing that this got published I thought Jewish people owned all of our media companies.”
To be clear: the reason many media outlets are biased in favor of Israel, is that this stance is politically useful to the United States and several powerful European countries. Israel is a tool for them, not the mastermind in charge.
But genuinely seeing people reading the Osama Bin Laden letter for America and going “the guy makes sense” when antisemitic world domination conspiracies are there loud and clear right off the bat.
You didn’t crack any code if you go “everyone America taught me not to trust? I should listen uncritically to them instead.” You’re still listening to propaganda.
This is exactly how I feel watching people talk longingly about the Soviet Union and happily use its symbols, while friends I have from those countries talk about the trauma their families still carry from that regime.
Communism makes sense for my ethics, therefore that authoritarian expansionist regime demonized by America must be good!
You’ll see an American leader going “I should have all the power” and another leader going “no, I should have all the power” and pretend like one of those has to be the good guy.
If you think you’re immune to propaganda, just because you’re critical of it when it favors one specific country you don’t trust, you’ve primed yourself to accept it from whoever decides to pretend they share your ideals.
Must be real scary being a liberal and seeing all of this extremely bad shit happening in the world right now and having no idea how to make sense of it. It’s no wonder they spend all of their time lashing out at people who don’t want to vote for Genocide Joe.
If there’s one thing the conspiracy theory class I’ve taken this semester has been good for it’s crystalizing the extent to which liberals view the world as an essentially random series of events which are driven by nebulous fearmongering concepts like Disinformation and Authoritarianism and Populism. No material analysis, no connecting A to B, no understanding of history or politics outside the vacuum of events as they happen. It’s just one big nihilistic clusterfuck and any attempt to understand it or god forbid change it just means you’re a fanatic who can’t accept the natural state of things to just get worse forever. Don’t forget to vote though.
the thing about copyright is that it has to be enforced in court. a ‘small artist’ – even ones who are independently successful and considerably wealthy – can simply not afford to fight a protracted legal battle while paying top legal talent. disney and marvel and any other big media company, however, can fight as many legal battles as they want for as long and have the legal fees be a drop in the bucket. companies that can afford lawyers and can afford to, if it really comes down to it, lose a lawsuit – that is, companies with millions of dollars to spare – are simply above copyright law. this is not a bug–this is a feature. this is the system working as designed.

girl who wont shut up about how she “loves a man in uniform” but as she keeps talking it becomes clear she’s talking about butches in customer service jobs
Why are you wasting your time on politics when we're all fucked from baked-in climate change anyway? Just get high and wait for the end like everybody else.
